Levine

Zalman Kaplan, the towns photographer, captured the history of Szczuczyn from within the community. So in addition to photographing the town cemetery and architecture and meetings, he also recorded Purim parties, family portraits, bicycle excursions, and other moments of carefree life. What is so poignant is that the towns nearly 3,000 Jews, pictured leading vibrant and joyful lives, had no idea what disastrous fate was to befall them. Compelling essays by Jonathan Rosen and Jeffrey Shandler provide excellent context for understanding the shtetl of Szczuczyn. Rosens essay, for example, draws a parallel to September 11, how the photographs used on missing posters and in newspapers were of the subject at a time of joy. Photographs of lives lived, like the portraits in the book, now symbolize not how these people lived, but how they died.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0623/1470/9053/files/lives-remembered-a-shtetl-through-a-photographers-eye-by-louis-d-levine_1.jpg?v=1787285406
jewish-life-in-poland-the-art-of-moshe-rynecki-1881-1943-by-moshe-rynecki
Jewish Life In Poland: The Art of Moshe Rynecki (1881-1943) by Moshe Rynecki
Moshe Rynecki used his paintbrush and palette to document and chronicle the life of his community-Jewish people of Warsaw, Poland. Some artists, however, do more than simply document the subjects that they see and watch-they use the canvas to reveal something new-to show us that which we did not see at first, that which we might not consider if we had observed the subject ourselves. While some might have seen a group of men sitting at a table studying the Talmud, Rynecki reveal the Rabbi gesticulating as he talks, he shows the men's spines bent from spending so much time studying, he shows the tallit wrapped across the shoulders of those who have put their heads down for a brief rest, and he makes visible the light that gently streams into the darkened room.

Rynecki's drive and ambition to paint came early in life and it came from within.
