Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les Liliacées, Plate 35, dated 1805, presents the pineapple—catalogued here as Ananas sativ—as a complete botanical portrait. The fruit occupies the centre of the pale, largely unmarked ground, its warm yellow and ochre surface crowned by a vigorous spray of blade-like green leaves. Redouté balances opposing movements with unusual clarity: the foliage rises and fans out above, while the thick stem and several downward-pointing leaves draw the composition towards the lower edge.

The plate belongs to Les Liliacées, Redouté’s major illustrated botanical work published between 1805 and 1816. Active across the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he became one of Europe’s most admired botanical artists, earning the epithet the “Raphael of flowers”. His reputation rested on his ability to reconcile two demands that do not always sit easily together: the precise description required for botanical study and the poise of an independent work of art. Here, the pineapple is not surrounded by landscape, props or decorative ornament. Its structure alone supplies the drama.

A closer look

The fruit itself is built from a tightly ordered network of hexagonal scales. Fine pale lines articulate their edges, while touches of orange and brown interrupt the dominant golden yellow. Highlights gather across the rounded centre and darker tones deepen around the lower portion, giving the pineapple a convincing sense of volume against the flat background. Each scale is treated as a distinct unit, yet the repeated pattern also produces a strong decorative rhythm.

Above it, the crown is less regular. Long leaves overlap, twist and taper in different directions, their serrated margins picked out with meticulous linear detail. Redouté varies the greens from deep, cool shadows to lighter yellow-green ridges, suggesting the folded surfaces of the leaves and the way light catches their edges. The foliage therefore feels both abundant and sharply organised: a succession of pointed silhouettes rather than an undifferentiated mass.

The lower stem provides a quieter counterweight. Its green shifts gradually in tone as it approaches the fruit, and the slight textural variations prevent this supporting form from appearing merely diagrammatic. At the foot of the composition, the handwritten-style labels “Bromelia Ananas” and “Ananas sativ” restore the specimen to the language of classification after the sensuous colour and pattern above.

Context and significance

Redouté worked within a botanical tradition in which illustrations served as records of plant form while also circulating as objects of cultivated visual pleasure. Les Liliacées exemplifies that dual purpose. Its scope reflects the botanical classifications of its own period, which do not always correspond neatly to modern family groupings; the pineapple is now understood as a bromeliad, a relationship also suggested by the plate’s visible designation “Bromelia Ananas”.

What distinguishes this study is the way an unfamiliar or exotic specimen is made immediately legible through isolation and order. The spacious ground eliminates distraction, while careful modelling turns the fruit’s armoured skin and serrated crown into an absorbing study of repeated geometry, tonal gradation and living growth. It is an especially compelling example of Redouté’s gift for making scientific observation appear effortless.
